Summary

In this latest installment in the beloved No。 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, Mma Ramotswe is tempted to put the brakes on a business venture before it even gets rolling。

Mr。 J。L。B。 Matekoni attends a course hosted by the local chamber of commerce entitled “Where Is Your Business Going?” But rather than feeling energized, he comes back in low spirits, unsure how to grow the already venerable and successful Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors。 Then an old friend from school approaches him about a new business venture that could be just the ticket。 When it turns out he will need to mortgage his property in order to pursue this endeavor, Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi wonder what this will mean for his current business―as well as their own。

Even as she puzzles over mysteries on the domestic front, Mma Ramotswe’s professional duties must take precedence。 When a concerned son learns that his aging father’s nurse now stands to inherit the family home, he begins to doubt her intentions and takes his case to Botswana’s premier detective agency。 Fortunately, Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi are committed agents of justice and agree to investigate。

Tricky as these matters may be, Mma Ramotswe knows that the most creative solutions are often found with the support of loving friends and family。 Working together over a cup of red bush tea, she and Mma Makutsi will rely on their tact, humor, and goodwill to ensure that all involved find the happiness that they deserve。

Not much of a plot

It was so good to visit my friends in Botswana。

This series is comfortable and slow paced。 As usual, there is a case for the Ladies #1 Detective Agency to solve, but it's a minor one and plays a small part。 Most of the story involves the musings of women about men。 It starts out slowly with thoughts about "past tense" men and modern ones。 The speed never picks up。 Three stars only because I am "comfortable" with the characters and their lifestyle。 This series is comfortable and slow paced。 As usual, there is a case for the Ladies #1 Detective Agency to solve, but it's a minor one and plays a small part。 Most of the story involves the musings of women about men。 It starts out slowly with thoughts about "past tense" men and modern ones。 The speed never picks up。 Three stars only because I am "comfortable" with the characters and their lifestyle。 。。。more

Lovely, just lovely。 Now I must go back and read them all!

This book was interesting in the way that Mma Potokwani took an even bigger part in helping with cases, almost that Mma Makutsi has been painted into a corner in her character and doesn't bring much wisdom any more。 This book was interesting in the way that Mma Potokwani took an even bigger part in helping with cases, almost that Mma Makutsi has been painted into a corner in her character and doesn't bring much wisdom any more。 。。。more

It made me want to believe in people all over again。I liked the term there is sometimes no such thing as just deserts mentioned by the author。It was not as funny as the other books in the series。I do love the author's imaginative use of words in this book。 He also does like happy endings that really satisfy。McCall Smith's evocative descriptions of Botswana, it's people sad natural environment are powerful and beautifully written。 It made me want to believe in people all over again。I liked the term there is sometimes no such thing as just deserts mentioned by the author。It was not as funny as the other books in the series。I do love the author's imaginative use of words in this book。 He also does like happy endings that really satisfy。McCall Smith's evocative descriptions of Botswana, it's people sad natural environment are powerful and beautifully written。 。。。more

I love this series! Although I was disappointed that there wasn't more of Charlie in this one, I love the back & forth between he & Grace。 I missed that in this volume。 And of course who doesn't want more of Grace's arch nemesis Violet?! All in all a lovely time spent in Botswana。And although I still miss Ms Lecat, Ms Amato was a pleasure to listen to。Can't wait until #23 I love this series! comfort food for the soul, welcome in these difficult times。 better than the last one with more going on "detective-wise" this time。 i know the focus on this series is not the detective-angle but i enjoy the stories that have more plot than just character building & this had a better balance。 very disappointed that the recorded version was not read by the always delightful lisette lecat but the new narrator from the last book, wish they would bring lisette back! comfort food for the soul, welcome in these difficult times。 better than the last one with more going on "detective-wise" this time。 i know the focus on this series is not the detective-angle but i enjoy the stories that have more plot than just character building & this had a better balance。 very disappointed that the recorded version was not read by the always delightful lisette lecat but the new narrator from the last book, wish they would bring lisette back! 。。。more

kindness winsLovely, as all the Ladies Detective stories are & leaves this reader with a warm smile。 It makes possible the idea that kindness given will return as kindness done。 Wishing the world healing through kindness。

Joy & D-lightI have read all of the “Ladies”。。。。 books, every one a joy & delight。 The philosophical Precious is a truly special woman。 Her kindness & love of her country is rarely found in other books。 In sharp contrast is the somewhat pessimistic Grace Makutsi, opinionated but smart where Precious is wise & smart。 Not least is the warm, gentle love of Rra Matekoni & Mma Ramotswe & their great respect for each other。I look forward to the next Ladies book。

I absolutely love this series。 I never tire of it。 I love the characters and I love the country, even though I've never been there。 I would like to think there are really people like Precious Ramotswe who live there。 I absolutely love this series。 I never tire of it。 I love the characters and I love the country, even though I've never been there。 I would like to think there are really people like Precious Ramotswe who live there。 。。。more

Beautiful。A favorite quote:“Sometimes there were doubts, and those doubts could persist, but often you really had no choice。 You had to feel your way through the complexities of this life and hope, just hope, that you got it right more often than you got it wrong。”

Wendy

Lots of repeated material from older books, but as an audiobook, there is something soothing about it。Some lovely philosophy tucked in here and there。

Another delightful ladies detective agency book。 This wasn't one of my favorites, but it is like hanging with an old friend。 Some days are great and some only so-so, but I never regret the time spent with friends。。。and that is how I feel about these books。 I love the characters。。。even if not much actually happens in the story。 I love Mma。 Ramotswe and I just know we would be dear friends。 Another delightful ladies detective agency book。 This wasn't one of my favorites, but it is like hanging with an old friend。 Some days are great and some only so-so, but I never regret the time spent with friends。。。and that is how I feel about these books。 I love the characters。。。even if not much actually happens in the story。 I love Mma。 Ramotswe and I just know we would be dear friends。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I love visiting Botswana and the beloved characters in this long running series。 Cups of red bush tea (Fair Trade, of course) are a must as I read because it is Mma Ramotswe's drink of choice。 In this installment of the story, Mr。 J。L。B Matekoni attends a business course, meets an old friend, and considers mortgaging Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors to become a partner in a new bus company。 There are several other plot points, one being the serious issue of domestic servitude by a very wealthy family I love visiting Botswana and the beloved characters in this long running series。 Cups of red bush tea (Fair Trade, of course) are a must as I read because it is Mma Ramotswe's drink of choice。 In this installment of the story, Mr。 J。L。B Matekoni attends a business course, meets an old friend, and considers mortgaging Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors to become a partner in a new bus company。 There are several other plot points, one being the serious issue of domestic servitude by a very wealthy family。 In one scene, Violet Sephotho behaves so outrageously, that I found myself feeling angry and had to laugh。 That leopard does not change her spots。 I had a hard time getting interested in the beginning of the story。 It rambles around and is much more introspective than previous novels in this series。 It is short on action。 Neither Mma Ramotswe's or Mma Makutsi's children appear and I missed them。 The visit to Botswana was still calming and enjoyable。 。。。more

This is the newest of the No。 1 Ladies' Detective Agency。 It is the 22nd in the series, and I have loved them all。 I look forward to them since Mr。 Smith has begun to produce them again。 I still hear Jill Scott's voice when I read them。 I would like for the series to be rerun and more episodes produces, but until that happens, I'll read the books。 This is the newest of the No。 1 Ladies' Detective Agency。 It is the 22nd in the series, and I have loved them all。 I look forward to them since Mr。 Smith has begun to produce them again。 I still hear Jill Scott's voice when I read them。 I would like for the series to be rerun and more episodes produces, but until that happens, I'll read the books。 。。。more

Let me begin by saying that I have enjoyed all of Alexander McCall Smith’s novels that I’ve read, particularly those in the #1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series starring Precious and Grace。 Book number 22, The Joy and Light Bus Company, however, is a disappointment。 The book needs a good editor。 The opening discussion between Precious and Grace is downright boring and unnecessary。It pains me to give the story only two stars since I have enjoyed the series so much。 Is it time to retire these lovely Let me begin by saying that I have enjoyed all of Alexander McCall Smith’s novels that I’ve read, particularly those in the #1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series starring Precious and Grace。 Book number 22, The Joy and Light Bus Company, however, is a disappointment。 The book needs a good editor。 The opening discussion between Precious and Grace is downright boring and unnecessary。It pains me to give the story only two stars since I have enjoyed the series so much。 Is it time to retire these lovely characters? The cases presented in The Joy and Light Bus Company feel ambivalent and unresolved。 Precious is her usual thoughtful self and Grace exhibits the characteristics we have come to expect: arguments。 I just tired of the story even though I finished reading the book。 。。。more

A new No 1 Ladies Detective Agency is always welcome like an old friend or your favorite comfort food。 As always a delightful story with familiar characters, a comfortable pace, and mysteries that are not at all taxing。 Gentle read on a winter day with a cup of tea。

a nice outing into the world of our lady detective。 I admit the sheer wordiness got to me in this book。 Maybe I was just not in the mood for the digressions and meandering conversations。

Valeta

I have read all of this series and enjoyed most of these books, but this one was ordinary at best。

As always, this humorous series made me laugh at the foibles of people, yet I felt hopeful about human nature due to the wisdom and compassion of Mma Romotswe 。 It is also comforting to know that the matron of the Orphan Farm is clearly capable of inspiring people to do the right thing, whether they want to or not!
